What breed of dog is right for my Family?

Help! I cant decide they're all so cute, but which one is right for us. Ive got an 1000 sq. ft. home. I also have a large fenced in back yard. I have a 1yo and a 2yo active little girls. I want a friend for them. I'd like a med to small dog. Not to small cause It would be to fragile to be around toddlers. Plus I take overnight trips out of state to the inlaws monthly. I want to be able to take the dog with us. I hate to have to burden with a large dog. We arent very active, basically just stay home with the kids play indoors. Outside weather permitting. Thanks for any input..

Good smaller breeds are beagles, bassett hounds, cocker spaniels, cairn terriers or pugs.
Let me also suggest a Lab, but especially a golden retriever. I grew up with a golden and they are by far one of the best breeds for families. They are easy to train and very gentle around kids. Kids your age are going to want to climb all over a dog. Our golden always let little kids climb all over her and pull on her hair. They are very laid back. She loved car rides too. Your house is large enough for one and with the backyard the dog can run around. The great thing about goldens is that they are retrievers. Excercising them can be as simple as tossing a ball! I hope you find a wonderful dog for your family!
