A boat has been tied to my dock for more then 60 days how may I claim this boat?

I have no idea whos boat it is but has been tied and chained to my dock for more then 60 days.Regerstation ran out last year,How may I claim salvage rights.I was almost underwater at one point until I bailed it out.

This depends on where you live. First you need to report the boat to your local registration agency - here in MD it is the Department of Natural Resources. Each state is a little different but most require something like this, They will research to make sure it was not stolen, if not you can then file with the registration agency to find out the recorded owners name and address. You have to send a registered letter that they have to sign for stating that if they do not remove the boat in 30 days you will fill for title, also any money owed has to be paid in that time. You will also have to place an ad in the local paper stating the same with description of the boat and owners name and address. at the end of 30 days you may file with the registration agency for title. It is not free - you will have to pay title fees and taxes based on the value of the boat. I have to do this about twice a year for boats in our marina. This is for abandoned boats - a mechanics lien is similar but the paper work is different.

Good Luck - Boat Safe!
