I have a home-based business that I want people to know.Should I promote it through the internet?
I do lots of sewing and embroidery work
It is a good way to promote yourself, but not as easy and quick as it looks like. You need an attractive website, it needs to be easy to navigate and is clean and clear. If you can't write one yourself (and I don't recommend this to anyone, who doesn't know the tricks, nooks and crannies, because no website is better than having one that's a nightmare), you need to find someone to do it for a reasonable price, which still can set you back between 200 & 500 $, depending on the size and what you would like to have included.
It takes a long time to get noticed, you might want to join relevant groups that give you exposure and allow you displaying your website. Don't forget that there are millions of websites out there, and you need to find your clients by actively marketing. There are also a lot of sites that charge you money for advertising your business. Check these out carefully, you might find one or two suitable for you, others are already so overloaded and unattractive, no on is interested in even browsing them.
Business cards are important too, and perhaps little leaflets. Advertising in smaller community papers, leaving brochures at craft shops or relevant businesses.
Link yourself with other relevant websites. You need to ask permission first and it is always polite to set a reciprocal link. Check the sites first, if they are clean and don't contain links to sites you wouldn't like to be associated with. This too can generate good traffic.
Get to know people on the virtual and in real life. Very important.
Patience is necessary, definitely.
