What are saffron threads?
I need "a pinch" for a recipe, but I couldn't find it in the store's spice rack...
Saffron, as has been noted, is the stamen of a specific species of crocus that is grown in Spain and certain other areas of the Mediterranean and Southern Asia. It has to be hand collected and each flower only produces 3 threads. When you can find it, it generally costs about $14-$20 a gram. That is for about 15 or so threads. Depending on how big your "pinch" is, that could be a very expensive meal.
I would suggest you look online for sources. I know that you can get it on Ebay and at Amazon. I am sure there are others out there as well if you cannot find it locally. You might try looking at the health food stores. If they do not have it, I am sure they can get it.
